Information about belcher/buttercup settings
The buttercup setting is also known as the belcher setting.
The setting was likely named after a famous English boxing champion, James “Jem” Belcher, who held the championship title between 1800 and 1805. (source)
His distinctive style included a signature blue and white neckerchief, a style which took off. This type of men’s scarf, worn around the neck and often secured with a ring, came to be called a belcher. The ring setting you see above then became known as a belcher ring and was very popular in Victorian times.
There are other ideas of how the belcher ring got it’s name and one other is that it came from a US jeweller, Thomas Belcher.
