Victorian Jewellery Overview
For a good overview of Victorian jewellery, the styles, motifs, gems, metals and techniques prevalent through the various eras, please read our article here. As a note of interest turquoise was one of Queen Victoria’s favourite gemstones.
Information about the gems found in this ring:
Turquoise is the birthstone of December (along with tanzanite and zircon). It was one of the first ever gemstones to be mined and has long been prized for its intense and beautiful colour. Although turquoise is a widely available stone, it is rarely found in its pure, natural form.
Diamonds are a girl’s best friend and are also the birthstone for the month of April. The name diamond comes from the ancient Greek meaning ‘unconquerable’. Diamonds are the hardest natural substance on earth, made up of nearly 100% carbon and the only thing that will scratch one is another diamond!
