Victorian Style Dearest Ring

Lovely looking acrostic ring, spelling out the word DEAREST, using; diamond, emerald, amethyst, ruby, emerald, sapphire and tanzanite. The scroll work throughout the gallery adds a lot of interest and is well done.

Hallmarked for 9ct gold and assayed in Birmingham. Date letter is slightly obscured, but this seems like a reproduction (as many dearest rings on the market are). It is  however very much in the Victorian style of DEAREST rings and all gems contained in the ring are genuine.

Size

UK O/O.5,  US 7.25

What is Acrostic Jewellery?

Acrostic jewellery is believed to have originated in Paris in the early 1800s and was first created by Mellerio, a famous Parisian jewellery company, before it was then adopted in England. In the Georgian and Victorian period secret messages and symbols were very popular as a way of expressing their feelings.

It really took off in Victorian times as the Victorians were masters of hidden messages. Important, as when it came to courting,  women were often closely guarded by their parents and chaperones, so men needed to be creative. Jewellery allowed a deep message to be conveyed, more than was sometimes possible in person.

There are many wonderful acrostic pieces of jewellery from these times. The most common words being, ADORE, DEAREST, REGARD and of course LOVE.
