Victorian Jewellery Overview
For a good overview of Victorian jewellery, the styles, motifs, gems, metals and techniques prevalent through the various eras, please read our article here.
Information about the gems used in this brooch:
Turquoise is the birthstone of December (along with tanzanite and zircon). It was one of the first ever gemstones to be mined and has long been prized for its intense and beautiful colour. Although turquoise is a widely available stone, it is rarely found in its pure, natural form.
Queen Victoria was a fan of turquoise, and spurred its use in Victorian jewellery. It became symbolic of true love, and it was for this reason that Queen Victoria gave her bridal party gifts of turquoise brooches.
